The ring that sits after the tip-in

What the ring keeps
Four numbers before anyone talks grind
Outer turn
We turn the OD so the ferrule does not mushroom over the hosel paint. Cheap stock mushrooms in one wet July.
Erie swell
Nylon drinks Maumee humidity. We keep dry stock in a sealed cabinet, not on the open pier rack.
Color band
Black, amber, or a vintage stripe. Matching a 1994 iron set is a library problem, not a dye-lot guess.
The argument
Collar work is not bore work
Shops that live in the hosel talk about adapters, sleeves, and how deep a shaft disappears into a Gulf-pattern bore. That is a different bench. Suite 8 on Superior Street is the ring that hides the joint. If the collar is short, the epoxy fillet shows. If the collar is long, the head never quite sits. If the collar swells, the paint line crawls.
We pull a head only when the ring has to come off. Most of the week is turning, matching, and reseating. Bring the iron that grew a white halo after a week at Maumee Bay State Park. That halo is the ferrule telling on itself.

Swollen nylon that crawled. We recut, dry, and replace with stock that has lived in the cabinet, not on a pegboard.
